about
During my placement at a dementia ward at an aged care facility I met a woman who was at the end-of-life stage and clearly in distress. I was not able to understand what she was moaning, but another staff member who spoke Mandarin was able to decipher that she was saying “I feel that God has forgotten me”
This piece is inspired by that statement, and an attempt to understand what that might feel like.
The lyrics originate from spoken words I heard at the facility. During my time there, I experienced and witnessed intense emotions which included distress, pain, fun optimism and laughter. This is an attempt to capture and remember my time there through song.
lyrics
Out of the lifts, this is my floor
I pace back and forth, back and forth, back and forth
I dunno I dunno I dunno
I just want to go home
Oh Vasili, no need to scream
We open the youtube and listen to the dancing queen
(feel the beat of the tambourine)
Christina today no visit no visit no visit
This feels like a prison,
no visit
Set me free, set me free
Has God forgotten Me, Set me free
Set me free, set me free
I’ve had enough can’t you see, Set me free
Sheila, it’s her birthday
We play bingo
Cake and Games Cake and Games
I stare out the window
I have a bass guitar, but no amplifying
Help me out of here
So I can buy one
You on guitar, me I play bass
Nance on Piano, wont that be ace
Set me free, set me free
Has God forgotten Me, Set me free
Set me free, set me free
I’ve had enough can’t you see, Set me free
Mo blows Paul a kiss
Like this like this
Oh not here not now not today
Not here not now
My wife is here today
My Wife is here.
Beeper from room 12
I need your help - I’m sorry
I’ve made a big mess
I can’t move, I can’t lift
Yes. You’re gonna need those gloves
Set me free, set me free
Has God forgotten Me, Set me free
Set me free, set me free
I’ve had enough can’t you see, Set me free

Even sound seems to be intentionally placed. These kicks and snares and repetitive vocals hit me hard every time. This Naarm based duo are a massive source of inspiration! ALX; GoSlow
Layers or language, semi recognisable, merge with chopped words and chromatic sounds. I need not understand, to allow the airy, vocal and instrumental wind flow through me - in full body breathwork ALX; GoSlow
